Researcher reveals superconducting surprise

245 views February 29th, 2008 by Rich Media Info

MIT physicists have taken a step toward understanding the puzzling nature of high-temperature superconductors, materials that conduct electricity with no resistance at temperatures well above absolute zero.If superconductors could be made to work at temperatures as high as room temperature, they could have potentially limitless applications. But first, scientists need to learn much more about how such materials work.

Using a new method, the MIT team made a surprising discovery that may overturn theories about the state of matter in which superconducting materials exist just before they start to superconduct. The findings are reported in the February issue of Nature Physics.

Machines will achieve human-level artificial intelligence by 2029, a leading US inventor has predicted.

Humanity is on the brink of advances that will see tiny robots implanted in people’s brains to make them more intelligent, said Ray Kurzweil.

The engineer believes machines and humans will eventually merge through devices implanted in the body to boost intelligence and health.

“It’s really part of our civilisation,” Mr Kurzweil explained.

Galaxy portrait reveals a blaze of newborn stars

292 views February 28th, 2008 by Rich Media Info

Newborn stars shine like celestial sparklers in a new portrait of the nearby Triangulum Galaxy – the most detailed ultraviolet image of a galaxy ever taken. Astronomers will use the image, taken by NASA’s Swift telescope, to create an “age map” of the galaxy’s components to understand how galaxies evolve over time.

The Triangulum galaxy, also known as M33, lies about 2.9 million light years from Earth and is a member of the “Local Group” of galaxies that includes the Milky Way.

It is about 10 times less massive than our galaxy and about half as wide. “[But] despite M33’s small size, it has a much higher star-formation rate than either the Milky Way or Andromeda,” says image creator Stefan Immler of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, US. “All of this star birth lights up the galaxy in the ultraviolet.”

The EMBRIO Advanced Concept is a one-wheeled recreational and commuting vehicle for the year 2025, designed by the Canadian company Bombardier Recreational Products. Although the riding position is similar to that of a motorcycle, the vehicle uses sensors and gyroscopes to balance up to two passengers on a large single wheel whilst driving. Specifications and pictures of this weird motorcycle are showed below:
