‘Devil May Cry 4′ slices and dices with style

“Devil May Cry 4″ is a marriage of convenience between style and substance, although the former is certainly driving the relationship. This is the first appearance of Capcom’s action series on the new generation of consoles — and while “Devil May Cry 4″ takes full advantage of all the horsepower to offer some breathtaking visuals, it is definitely anchored to some aging game play.

A lengthy opening cinema sets up the intrigue. Knights and servants of a religious order are assembled in Fortuna City to listen to their leader talk about the fear of an incoming demon horde. Dante, a stranger to a gathered audience (but not franchise fans), crashes the ceremony and assassinates the leader in cold blood before making a dramatic getaway. You are sent after this assassin in what looks like an open-shut case of justice, but as you give pursuit, you learn that elements inside this theocracy are perhaps a little more sinister than let on to be.

The anti-hero of the franchise, Dante, is relegated to an extended cameo in the fourth chapter of the adventure. This might immediately put off some longtime fans, but the newcomer Nero is certainly a suitable replacement. Nero is something of an emo hero, disaffected by the chaos around him and always ready to dismiss danger with a dry quip. But he comes loaded for bear (demon bear, that is) with a demonic arm, a twin-barreled revolver called Blue Rose and his massive sword, Red Queen.

Web 2.0’s Long Road to IPOs

During the Web’s heyday, a profitable Internet company nearing $100 million in annual sales while luring a million new customers a month would have found itself on the IPO fast track. But that’s hardly the case for LinkedIn, a professional networking site that has cleared those hurdles and then some.

Instead, LinkedIn is hewing closely to the Web economy’s new motto on initial public offerings: Easy does it. Founded in 2003, LinkedIn may not sell shares until some time next year. Likewise, social networking site Facebook, worth $15 billion on paper, may not go public until 2010, a company board member says. People close to Facebook previously suggested an IPO could come as soon as 2009.

Game review: Lost - Via Domus

Based on the TV series, Lost: Via Domus captures the spirit of the show but fails to create a decent game. Playing as a new character on the island, your story intertwines with events from seasons one and two of the show. Ostensibly an old-fashioned adventure game, Lost gets you speaking to characters, solving puzzles and exploring the island.

In theory, this should be great. But clunky and anachronistic gameplay - instant death and invisible barriers rear their aged heads - quell enthusiasm. The flashbacks work well, though, not least because they advance the story - the strongest aspect of the game. But the production values are mixed.

Actor and dancer Patrick Swayze, star of such hit films as “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost,” has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but is responding well to treatment, his publicist said on Wednesday. The 55-year-old performer was working during his treatments, publicist Annett Wolf said, dismissing reports in the tabloid media that portrayed him in grave condition with only weeks to live.

Wolf issued a written statement from his physician, Dr. George Fisher that said: “Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment.”

“All of the reports stating the timeframe of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue,” Fisher said in the statement. “We are considerably more optimistic.”
