IBM using DNA to make carbon nanotube grid computer chips

Scientists at IBM are conducting research into arranging carbon nanotubes-strands of carbon atoms that can conduct electricity-into arrays with DNA molecules

Once the nanotube array is meticulously constructed, the laboratory-generated DNA molecules could be removed, leaving an orderly grid of nanotubes. The nanotube grid, conceivably, could function as a data storage device or perform calculations.

Potentially, DNA could address, or recognize, features as small as two nanometers. Cutting-edge chips today have features that average 45 nanometers.

Google Says I.P. Addresses Aren’t Personal

Google has responded to European regulators who have suggested that Internet Protocol addresses of users be considered personally identifiable information. Not surprisingly, it disagrees.

The issue matters because the standards for what companies do with data that can be traced back to an individual are subject to tighter rules than other information they use — as they should be. Google records the I.P. address associated with every search it handles.

In a post on the Google Public Policy Blog, Alma Whitten, a software engineer, points out that often the I.P. address assigned to any one computer is changed on a regular basis by the Internet provider that services that computer.

Asus Eee PC Gives Nightmares To Sony

If you didn’t buy an Asus Eee PC, you probably know someone that owns one, and if that’s not true either, I am sure you heard of the thing, at least that! When I saw it for the first time, I was quite surprised, and didn’t expect to see it sell so well. I usually don’t believe what the local press says, not “official” reports from local retailers either, but I have friends working in the field, and I know for sure that the Asus Eee PC had really strong sales. I see no problem with that, but Sony seems to have nightmares about the Eee PC leeping it up…

Freeze Memory Chips, Steal Encrypted Data

78 views February 29th, 2008 by Rich Media Info

According to an article published by New York Times, Princeton University researchers have come out with a method to steal encrypted information stored on computer hard disks. The trick is pretty simple according to them but certainly not for us. It involves freezing of DRAM (Dynamic Random Acces Memory) chip. This is done to exploit the little-known vulnerability of the DRAM chip.

These chips temporarily hold data, including the keys to modern data-scrambling algorithms. When the computer’s electrical power is shut off, the data, including the keys, is supposed to disappear. But the chips actually retain their data for seconds or even minutes after power is cut off.
